Butterflies find their way into my work again and again—symbols of transformation and freedom.
For those of you who know my work, you know that butterfly imagery permeates my art. I love their beauty, the miraculous nature of their existence, and the way they float and dance through the world—quietly reminding all they encounter of magic.
Butterflies are not only beautiful; they represent transformation on every level. The chrysalis stage of metamorphosis shows us how we can go within ourselves, dissolve old forms and unfold into something new. That dark, quiet stage of the caterpillar’s life teaches surrender and trust as essential parts of growth and renewal.
What many people don’t know is that butterflies are deeply personal to me because of my grandmother. She passed in 2016, and we used to raise butterflies together—watching them emerge and releasing them into her garden, where they drifted among the flowers she tended with such devotion. That spirit of care, patience, wonder, and love lives on in my work.
The longest-lived adult butterflies may live nine months to a year, but most species only live two to four weeks. The metamorphosis and life of the butterfly closely mirrors the process of spiritual transformation and serves to remind us that life is short —meant to be lived to the fullest, in full color, asking us to notice the moments (some small and fleeting, like butterflies) and to slow down and say thank you.
